As the youngest of many children (and in fact the same age as his eldest nephew, King Torith), Prince Darien often found himself lost in the shuffle. However, there were some advantages to this, as he was able to strike a love match with a young mage named Lilith. The two married and prepared for a life of domestic bliss.

However, they soon found that they had different expectations of their marriage. Lilith had always been fairly ambitious and had worked hard first to achieve her status as a mage and then to make herself known among the court and royal family. At one point she even had the wild notion of marrying Torith before she fell for his uncle instead. Once wed, she imagined that she would gain more influence in the number one way women hold power: through the raising of many children, each of royal blood. Unfortunately for her, Darien desired to keep their family small, to make sure he could give each of his children a good portion of his time and attention. To make sure of this, Darien stopped sharing his wife’s bed after the birth of their second child. This disagreement effectively cooled the flames of their romance and has led to a complete breakdown of the marriage; however this fact was kept secret, known only to the family and their household.

The eldest of Darien and Lilith’s children is Prince Holden. All his life has been spent in the public eye, more so than might be expected for someone whose birth placed them so distant from the throne. But Princess Lilith wanted to make the most out of the opportunities of her two children and pushed both of them to be visible members of the royal family, especially in the court situation. Her biggest dream for them would be for them to make good marriages, perhaps to their own cousins, and to be successful no matter what.

Holden was always a fairly popular in the court. He was always large for his age, not to mention attractive, so he especially gained attention from the females around him. When he grew older, he acquired a reputation as somewhat of a womanizer; however, it was recognized that he was not the one doing the chasing or seducing, but merely that he was not one to pass up an opportunity or make any long-lasting attachments.

Due to the majority of his time being spent at court, Holden became quite skilled in aspects of courtly life. In particular, he had quite a talent for horsemanship, especially enjoying hunting, and also was quite accomplished at dancing. He had passable skills in arts such as music and literature as well, though nothing exceptional and so he usually would not participate if he could help it.

The revelation that Holden had the potential to become a mage delighted his mother. Princess Lilith, being a mage herself, quickly began to have dreams of her son achieving greatest beyond her previous expectations. She immediately began to do what she could to prepare him to go to Everthorne Academy and stressing how important it was for his entire future that he succeeds.

Holden is known for being an incredible calm individual. He does not yell, he does not cry, he does not get upset in any way. He also does not smile.

Having never had any great ambitions of his own in life, Holden has gone along with his mother’s plans, since they matter more to her than anything ever has to him. He gets some pleasure from succeeding, but it is moderate at best. He also does secretly resent his mother at times, when he feels that she sees him as more of a tool than a person. Similarly, he has little respect for his father who sees him as nothing more than a child to dote on. His sister and he get along well, however, and Chelsea is the only one who knows of these feelings, which she also shares. It is one of many secrets which they keep and has helped make both of them excellent liars.

Holden is fairly sociable and generally does what is expected of him, whether it is being arrogant in the presence of commoners or taking a woman to bed. Alongside this, he often is looking, trying to find something that excites him.

So far, he has failed.

Holden is quite tall and has a broad, muscular frame. He has short black hair and dark, cold eyes. He is considered to be quite handsome among those in the court. Holden wears very expensive, perfectly tailored clothing, usually in dark, rich colours.
